2D Action Platformer
If you get sick of backtracking and ability-gating, then the linear 2D platformer still has it’s place in the modern age. Here are 15 of my favourites to check out.
Updated January 28, 2021
#15 Sonic Mania*
We begin with a not-so-indie title, but it was amazing that a fan game developer made such fantastic 2D Sonic games, so much so that SEGA brought him on board to make a game hearkening back to the Genesis classics.
#14 They Bleed Pixels
They Bleed Pixels is a little creepy and unsettling with the Eldtrich horror inspiration but combined with some tricky platformer and good combat makes this of interest!
#13 Cursed Castilla (Maldita Castilla EX)
I love the pixel art in this retro title, and that it also pays tribute to Ghouls 'n Ghosts.
#12 Spark the Electric Jester
Speaking of Sonic fan games, the original Spark the Electric Jester seems exactly that but with a lot more personality than simply cloning the blue blur. This title has 3D sequels but I still prefer the original.
#11 The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile
If you enjoyed Salt & Sanctuary, you’ll be interested to delve into the back catalogue of developer Ska Studios with this very stylish gritty title that looks awesome.
#10 Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon*
Another not-so-indie title since it did come from Inti Creates, CotM is the 8-bit excellent companion title to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and manages to capture the classic-vania vibe very nicely.
#9 MO: Astray
I quite like the look of MO: Astray, and the possession mechanic that allows you to access your target’s memories is really neat!
#8 Wings of Vi
From the maker of I Wanna Be the Boshy, expect a similar amount of challenge (but less unfair) in this title.
#7 Bladed Fury
Bladed Fury is one of THE MOST GORGEOUS hand drawn titles, tapping on Chinese myths & legends, and is not to be missed.
#6 THE ETERNAL CASTLE [REMASTERED]
I also covered this title in my list on the Best Looking Pixel Art games since the 2-bit CGA look impressed me a lot and is a cinematic action platformer that you don’t see everyday.
#5 Sakuna Of Rice & Ruin
This is a relatively new title where you harness the POWER OF RICE as the Harvest Goddess, seeking to claim an island from monsters and demons!
#4 Hell is Other Demons
I love the arena action title HiOD, where the unique optional objectives and challenges are fun (no guns anyone?). It’s a lot like Super Crate Box in feel and comes highly recommended.
#3 Freedom Planet
LOVE the Sonic-like title Freedom Planet, where there’s an interesting variety in playable characters with their own story campaign, and the “gotta-go-fast” sections are well done as well. I’m looking forward to the sequel.
#2 Katana ZERO
‘Hotline Miami as a 2D Platformer’ basically describes Katana ZERO, where the sleek neon aesthetic and great action makes it a dream to play. Apparently there’s a massive DLC in the works as well!
#1 Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
THE iconic indie 2D action platformer has to be Shovel Knight, with this popular character having appeared and crossed over into so many other games. The 4 campaigns of Treasure Trove also makes it excellent value for money.
